S.W.A.P. presents to Spring Oaks Middle 6th graders and parents

This past Friday, S.W.A.P. leaders were invited by Principal Paul Seuss, to present to Spring Oaks Middle 6th graders and parents, at the school’s 6th grade orientation.  Presenting to about 50 pre-registered students and parents, the S.W.A.P. team, along with Communities in Schools’ John Vargas, outlined how the 2013-2014 S.W.A.P. program will focus on career opportunities available to students who complete a technical, two, or four year degree.  The S.W.A.P. program will support SBISD’s T-2-4 goal of doubling the % of students completing a technical, two year, and four year degree – by showing students the WHY they should excel in school and go onto high learning.  The WHY will be presented in field trips to medical centers, oil & gas corporations, colleges, where we will uncover the careers associated with those organizations.

Registered 6th graders and families received S.W.A.P. t-shirts and magnets – to help them keep track of our 9 Saturday trips.

S.W.A.P. is working with John Vargas to re-enroll our legacy 7th and 8th graders  — and it working with SWHS to identify alumni S.W.A.P. students to work as leaders & volunteers.

The first S.W.A.P. will be Saturday 9/21 – and it will be held at Chapelwood UMC.  The first day will outline the goals of the program, deliver a needs assessment to students (and maybe to volunteers!), and allow us to get to know each-other.  All other Saturdays will be a field trip!
